Service technician Leif Larsson is a legend in his trade. His knowledge, accuracy and cheerful mood have meant that he and Flintab are increasingly being hired by other scale suppliers.
– If you’ve been around as long as I have, you should know a thing or two, but it’s certainly nice to be appreciated, says Larsson for the day on site in a shaft at a heavy industry in Katrineholm.
For 26 years, he has coached around Central Sweden and prepared scales. The starting point has been the home in Eskilstuna, it has been for all of his 56 years. Why the career choice fell on scales and calibration was more of a coincidence, he says:
– I had training as a service technician with me and had worked with cable TV for a few years, which made me a bit of an all-rounder, which was a plus when I applied for the job at Flintab.
In addition to his usual duties as a service technician, Leif Larsson is also a so-called team leader out in the field; he is the one who keeps everything and everyone in order during the calibrations. Thus, he has a hand in the game on all levels. Suddenly a colleague calls him, it’s urgent. An extra handle is needed. 1,000 kilos of dumbbells must be lifted onto pallets, which in turn must be winched up to the third floor. Leif is back soon, he continues:
– People have no idea how many scales are out there, there are check scales, bench scales, vehicle scales, all types, one customer knows 40 different kinds, it can be in gravel pits, foundries, shops, heating plants, everywhere… it’s like set up for corporate espionage, the service legend laughs and adds:
– But today you can read a lot online, so there are no secrets left. However, there are always new things to learn, digital load cells or whatever it may be. Should there be any problem, there is always good support from Jönköping.
What is wrong with the scales?
Most often it is an electronic fault, caused by gnawing rats, you may have dropped things or the thunder has passed with lightning as a result. A direct hit can destroy an entire wave of vehicles. I remember a thunderstorm, it went from Västerås over Örebro all the way to Karlstad. Then we had to do. But that doesn’t happen twice.
What is the distribution of wave products?
– It’s about five or six different makes, 60 percent of the customers stick with Flintab scales, it makes everything so much easier when it comes to access to spare parts. Otherwise, shipping times will be expensive. More and more companies have realized this, which has meant that they have switched to Flintab entirely.
What is the most enjoyable part of the job?
– A scale can stand wrong, weigh wrong, there can be dirt under it, then you correct it and are met with great gratitude. Then you leave there feeling satisfied and happy. That’s the reward.
A technical genius, a pusher with a twinkle in his eye. This is how colleagues see Erik Liljeqvist, service technician Flintab based in Hässleholm. His specialties: industrial scales, calibration and motorcycles.
– It started with motocross anyway, says Erik. I spent the days working with trucks in the villa garage at home in Sösdala outside Hässleholm. Then I went to truck training in Ljungby, moved to Jönköping for two years in connection with my wife studying there.
– But then it happened that we returned to Skåne and I slipped into the wave industry with slightly bigger challenges.
Erik turned 38 today. Erik is team leader and bases over three technicians in the Scania region, including Falkenberg and Blekinge.
– Now I have worked at Flintab for ten years and there have been new challenges every day, many meetings with people, curious people who are amazed that the weighing can be about as little as 30 grams of precision… all this makes the working days both inspiring and fun.
The everyday tasks are mostly about calibrations of giant industrial scales, goods scales, small and large pallet scales, small and large customers who wish to have scales repaired.
– Since scales are extremely sensitive instruments, we deal with precision scales where every gram counts for the customers’ processes. Sometimes we load larger industrial scales with ten tons, where the customer demands that the scale should show no more than ten kilos of incorrect difference.
But the development is making significant progress in its parts, says Erik:
– Yes, today new customers find us easily online.
This has of course opened up the market so that you can service all makes and scales?
– Yes, it definitely has, we have direct contact with the customer today, which enables faster and more efficient measures.
You can smell an oily scent from Erik’s overalls through the mobile phone, the 500-cubic meter is surely not far away either. So a skin pie on it and Steppenwolf’s “Born to be Wild” in the background…
Motorcycles are my passion, so I’m lucky both in my free time and at work, Erik coos.

– Pepper, pepper, I have always been careful with risk assessments. I could have trained a little more, it wouldn’t have hurt.
